Those Guys Finish First

We had one of the best days of football games in my memory. Two epic games and basically a coin toss that separated 3 teams from being the YMCA Spring 2015 Champions. That said, congratulations to Those Guys a collaboration of players from our Fall league that took home the Spring Championship.

Having a warm-up game beating up a depleted Mud Dogs team to start, Those Guys in the championship game against High Times found themselves trailing the entire game by 2 scores. With under 5 minutes left, Kyle Mason used his one run option and scored from 25 yards out on a scamper that cut the lead by one score. Their defense was able to stop the High Times potent offense on a 4th down flag pull at midfield for a turnover. Utilizing the short field, Those Guys capitalized and tied up the score to the unsuspecting Eric Dieter. With a tied ball game, but a missing Jacques Fabian (with a game high 3 TDs) sidelined with a pulled hamstring, and with less than 40 seconds in the game to mount a game winning drive – an errant snap had the ball for High Times to uncharacteristically bounce out of the back of the endzone for a safety and final score 0f 37 to 35 in favor of Those Guys.

The Stumps – having manhandled the season with numerous blowouts, had a tough loss to High Times in the first game of the tournament. Both teams traded blows and finally determined the winner in the 4th overtime. Trailing by 1, Stumps went for the 2-point conversion. The pass – was knocked down in the endzone by High Times’ Raphael securing HTs’ advancement to the championship game.

My picks for Tournament Accolades: QB MVP is Kyle Mason of Those Guys with 4 TD Pass and a game changing TD run in the championship game. Player MVP is Joe Harlow with 4 TD catches (and a half dozen more highlight catches) and 2 interceptions in Sunday’s two games. I will tally up all the stats for the spring season awards in the coming week.

Congratulations gentlemen, it was definitely one of the best days of football and sportsmanship that I’ve witnessed. You can all say that you left it all on the field Sunday.
